Hernia-like illness

Which diseases are similar to the groin and inguinal hernia?

Hydrocele or "water" in the testicle

Firstly, very similar to an inguinal hernia is a hydrocele . This is a disease of the testicle and its wrappings. As a result of a trauma, an infection or a tumor "water" is collected between the two sheets of testicular membranes. Symptoms are swelling of the testicle’s bag, but unlike the groin hernia the swelling is lower and does not continue to the inguinal canal. Ultrasound is very important for the diagnosis. The treatment is surgical.

Inflammation of the inguinal lymph nodes /lymphadenitis /

It is similar to the hernia by the painful swelling. There may be fever. Ultrasonography is a method of diagnostics. A scanner or an MRI can be used. A biopsy is needed sometimes to establish diagnosis.

Infection of the skin, especially inobese people may simulate hernia

Symptoms include swelling, pain and redness. Treatment is with antibiotics and compresses. A surgery for cleaning the pus discharge when an abscess is formed.

Diseases that may be confused with umbilical hernia are:

Skin infection (omfalit)

It occurs with pain and swelling. In more obese people it can resemble an umbilical hernia. It is treated with compresses and cleaning of the retained fluids. Spread of stomach cancer or ovaries cancer

Metastasis of cancer in the navel can also mimic umbilical hernia. An ultrasound and a scanner are needed. Symptoms of diaphragmatic or hiatal hernia overlap with:

Heart disease

Arrhythmia and palpitations. The mechanical compression of the heart caused by diaphragmatic hernia causes the heartbeat. Very often, these patients belong in cardiology. Gastric or duodenal ulcer

The pain and stomachache in these diseases are similar to the symptoms of diaphragmatic hernia. It is not impossible for these diseases to be combined. It is very important that a gastroscopy and a contrast X-ray examination of the stomach is performed.

Respiratory distress

Atelectasis, pleural effusion / "water pleurisy" / pneumonia. Important for the diagnosis are an X-ray of the lungs and a chest scan in mroe complicated cases. Epigastric hernia must be distinguished from:

Gastric ulcer or duodenal

the patient has pain in the upper abdomen. In a small hernia case and insufficient experience of the physician, epigastric hernia can be treated as an ulcer. An ultrasound of the abdominal wall by a herniolog is important for the diagnosis. Lipomas and fibromas

Fibroids and lipomas under the skin of the abdomen wall may mimic epigastric hernia. They are easily distinguished by ultrasound. Their treatment is also operative - removal of the tumor. Shpigel hernia has symptoms similar to:

Appendicitis

In Shpigel hernia the pain and swelling on the right can be taken for appendicitis. Ultrasound is a method of distinction. Colitis

The pain is in one side of the abdomen, similar to the Shpigel hernia. A study of the colon is needed. Colon Cancer

This is a very common disease nowadays. Pain and symptoms vary. Colonoscopy  is most important for the diagnosis.
